Strange as it may seem, poems have been written on termites. It is true that poetry can be on any topic, but to write a poem on termites is definitely unusual. However, there are a few poems which are humorous that has been written on termites.

Ogden Nash who is known for his humor and wit has written many humorous poems – he hasn’t written too many on termites, but the one that he has written is prescribed for students and his poems are known for the social impact and humor that it contains. One of the poems he has written goes like this: It is about a termite that burrowed into the wood and found the taste great – and that is how Aunt May fell through the parlor floor.

This poem is considered well known in its time both for it humor and simplicity – it gives you an idea of how the termite operates and conveys its humor while describing the destruction caused by the termite in a home.

It is well known that Ogden Nash wrote poems on unlikely subjects, so when he came out with a poem on termites, his fans were not taken by surprise. His humor on the subject of the common termite has made us look at this insect in a humorous manner rather than with irritation.

These are known facts, but Mr. Nash has decided to take this topic, bring humor into it and even turn it around to bring a smile to everyone instead of thinking only in terms of the destruction that a termite can cause. There are many different types of poetry. I counted 50 on a quick search of the internet. You may have heard of Haiku and Limericks. There are the more obscure types too, like Terzanelle and Sestina. What is a stanza? A division of a poem consisting of two or more lines. How many ways can you structure a stanza? As many as you want. Look at this stanza from the poem, “Gratitude:”

Nothing…

But gratitude

Each line is a smaller part of the previous line. In this case, it quiets the mind in order to emphasize the last word: gratitude. However, this idea could be used in many ways. You could start with a line like, “She watched the birds come in from the sea,” and it can reduce to, “Come in from the sea;” “From the sea:” “Where Michael was left alone in the storm.”

Each stanza could have lengthening lines. Lines could be varied in length to create a picture on the page. Playing with stanzas is a fun way to create new types of poetry.

In the poem “Do Not Believe In God,” each stanza starts with one of our senses: “See God… in stars and sunlight… and the face of your lover;” Hear God… in wind and waves… and the music of the birds.” All the senses are covered. How could we use this general idea? By starting each stanza with a different verb or adjective? By starting each stanza with a different person’s name? By having each stanza get smaller or larger as the poem progresses?

Poetry is the ultimate symbol of the refinement of the human culture. “Spontaneous Outflow of Emotions” Shelly defined poetry thus. Wordsworth said “our sweetest songs are that which tell of saddest thoughts”. Poetry has been written and enjoyed eversince the languages were born. Poetry was the staple diet of courts of kings and the durbars of emperors. Poets were held in huge respect and pampered by the kings of yester years. The fine taste for all things literary especially poetry was prevalent in those days when the all the kings had to do was to sit back and enjoy poetry, jesting and tales of valour(Their Own!). Poetry really flourished in the post-christ era with great poets like Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Shelly, Byron and the like enriching the English literature with their great works. In India too, literature and poetry flourished, greatly patronised by Kings and Emperors. The Great Hindu Kings of the Maurya,Chalukya, Chera, Chola and the Pandya kingdoms and the great emperors of the Vijayanagara,Maratha and such great kingdoms thorough out the Indian Sub-continent, were all unreserved admirers of poetry and contributed greatly to fostering great poets.

Poetry floursihed in almost all languages known to man. After the formation of the USA, English literature saw such great poets like Walt Whitman. The French revolution was permanently placed in the world map of great freedom struggles through the immense literary works of the great poets of the time. Poetry produced enhanced perception of romanticism, heroics, patriotism, sorrow and joy. The entire gamut of human emotions was brought forth through the magical pen of the great poets.
